The Real Reason Most WMS Projects Struggle Early

Part 1 of 3: The Real Reason Most WMS Projects Struggle Early

After 30+ years at the intersection of supply chain, IT, and project delivery, I’ve seen the same pattern repeat:
- WMS projects rarely struggle because of bad software.
- They struggle because the business isn’t ready.

Most teams underestimate what a clean implementation actually requires on their side:
- Clear, consistent processes
- Accurate, trusted data
- Documented requirements
- Dedicated resources
- Time to focus

Instead, many organizations treat implementation like something that happens to them.

It doesn’t. It’s something you have to actively drive.

When that doesn’t happen, the symptoms show up fast:
- Confusion around ownership
- Slipping timelines
- Unexpected costs

I’ve seen workflows live entirely in people’s heads.
I’ve seen inventory rules change depending on the shift.
I’ve seen teams where everyone is still “doing a bit of everything.”

A WMS won’t fix that.
It will expose it.

When preparation is weak, the system becomes the scapegoat.
When preparation is strong, the system becomes a force multiplier.

This isn’t criticism, it’s the reality of growth.
Fast-growing companies move quickly. Structure usually lags behind.
Closing that gap before implementation starts is what separates projects that stall… from ones that deliver lasting value.
